ACK BUMALA PARISH BACKGROUND

A. BACKGROUND INFORMATION:-

ACK Bumala parish is headquartered in Bumala location, Butula sub-county and in Busia County.

B. CREATION OF THE PARISH

A.C.K Bumala parish was created on 1st of January 1992 by Rev.John Owuyo after having been curved from Bujumba parish under Rev.Harrison Onjejo and in Bukhakhalarire archdeaconry under Ven.Wyclif Stanley Were Nambale Diocese under the Late Bishop Isaac Namango.

Originally there were four (4) churches namely:

  1. A.C.K BUMALA
  2. A.C.K NYAMWANGA
  3. A.C.K BUKHAKHALA
  4. A.C.K IBANDA

Later on a fifth church was started namely ACK Mayoni and they have remained five up to date.

C. THE CHURCHES (IN ORDER OF AGE)

1. A.C.K NYAMWANGA

This is the oldest church in the parish although it died off for several years and resurfaced later. It was started by missionaries on their way from Maseno mission to Uganda, led by a missionary called Chadwick. They put up a grass thatched structure in the home of the village headman for worship in the year 1910. The name of the village headman was called Shiundu Dibondo. Unfortunately when the missionaries left for Uganda the village headman turned the structure into a beer drinking hall, when the missionaries checked in on their way from Uganda they found the headman and his elders drinking inside the church. The missionaries were so disgusted that they pronounced a curse on the community. They left in a hurry heading towards Butere. They found the marama people to be friendly to the word of God, so they started developing the place by constructing Chadwick Teachers College which led to the present day Butere complex.

The curse pronounced by the missionaries has been silently dragging the community behind in development but thank God who has made us reach this far. After the missionaries departed, the church moved from Nyamwanga to a place called Khumufudu within Bumala village. Then after some time the same church moved to another place called Buduba-Mboko. Then again after some time the same church moved to another place called Nabalaji in Mukhwayo village. Then again after some time the same churched moved to Murende village and then finally again the church moved to Bumala center.

Later on (around 1970) that Nyamwanga church resurfaced at Nyamwanga and up to date it is moving ahead very very strong.

The first teacher in the new Nyamwanga church was Agnes Were Mbeja.

2.ST PAULS ACK BUMALA CHURCH

After the curse at Nyamwanga, the church moved from place to place and finally landed at Bumala. It was in the late fifties. The site was at Namuhinia (the present day mercy primary school) later the church moved to Bumala primary school Classrooms. Finally one member called Jeremiah Ayieko donated the one acre piece of land where the church presently stands.

3. ST THOMAS ACK BUKHAKHALA

Bukhakhala church was born by Bumala church in the year 1980 through the initiative of Mwalimu james Mabangu Odhiambo in the land of Mzee Ochieng Sibabale. The Mzee was by then in Uganda. When he returned back from Uganda later that year he ordered the church out of his land. The church then moved to Mr. Nelson Maingas land. Then later on the church moved to Bukhakhala primary school which by then was a nursery school, then later on one church member called Bonface donated a quarter an acre piece of land where the church presently stands. The first church teacher was the Late Ibrahim Onyango.

4. ST MATHEWS ACK IBANDA CHURCH

This church was born by Bumala church in the year 1982 after the Christians from there found Bumala a bit far. They requested the then Bujumba Parish to grant them permission to start a church. Through the leadership of the late Andrew Okech. They persuaded Mama Hildah Okwira to donate some land, so Mama Hilda donated a quarter acre of land where the church presently stands. The first church teacher was the late Ev Ibrahim Onyango Nungo.

5. A.C.K MAYONI CHURCH

This church was born by Bukhakhala church in 1994 through the encouragement of the then Vicar of Bumala parish called Sister Deborah Magero before she was ordained. The church was started in the home of the late Joram Okhito Mugogwe, then later on the late Augustine Nyongesa donate a portion of his land where the church presently stands, another portion of land was donated by Erima.

The first church teacher was the late Ev Ibrahim Onyango Nungo

D. TUKUTENDEREZA EAST AFRICA FELLOWSHIP.

This group of saved brethren from western and Nyanza regions found their Headquarter for their monthly meetings at Bumala from early fifties to date. They started holding their monthly meetings when the church was at the Namumia grounds. Most, if not all of the blessings that Bumala church and community has received from God has been through their prayers and their regular visits to this church. This has contributed a lot towards breaking the curse that the missionaries pronounced to the church and the community.
